Back Pain Support in Calgary

Back pain is one of the most common health complaints for adults in Calgary. Hours spent sitting at a desk, repetitive lifting, or an awkward sleeping position can strain muscles and joints, interfering with your ability to work, exercise, and enjoy time with your family. Memorial Drive Chiropractic and Massage provides natural care, focusing on identifying the root cause of your discomfort and restoring healthy spinal function.
How Back Pain Affects Daily Life
While it’s designed to carry your body’s weight and allow for flexible movement, problems often develop when the spine is asked to do more than it can handle. Common causes include:
- Prolonged sitting or poor posture
- Repetitive lifting or bending
- Muscle strains and sprains
- Stress-related tension
- Spinal misalignments or disc problems
- Injuries from accidents or sports
Back pain may present as stiffness, sharp spasms, pain radiating into the hips or legs, or difficulty standing upright for long periods. Ignoring these signals can make a minor irritation turn into a recurring problem.
The New Patients’ Experience
Your first visit is designed to gain a better understanding of your back health. Dr. Wagemakers begins with a review of your health history, followed by a posture analysis, range of motion and strength testing, and a gait or movement analysis.
We use INSiGHT™ scans to provide additional information about your spine and nervous system. These non-invasive scans may help guide care recommendations.
If you have red flag symptoms such as severe numbness, unexplained weight loss, or loss of bowel/bladder control, we recommend immediate medical evaluation before beginning chiropractic care.
How Our Natural Care May Help Your Pain
Chiropractic adjustments are intended to improve spinal alignment, which may help with mobility and comfort. Depending on your needs, care may also include guided stretches, ergonomic and posture recommendations, and simple at-home strategies.
Sessions may be more frequent initially, then reduce as improvement occurs. A typical session lasts 15-20 minutes and is tailored to your comfort level. This approach may support comfort and improved mobility over time.
Patient Experience: Finding Hope Through Chiropractic Care
Dr Wagemakers shares a patient experience that made a lasting impression.
As a chiropractor, there are moments with patients that stay with me for years.
I will never forget the moment a hardworking auto mechanic came into the office, barely able to move. He had been off work for more than a week because his back discomfort was so intense that even standing upright brought tears to his eyes. He worried he might not return to work any time soon. The discomfort was affecting his sleep, his mood, his relationships, and his overall sense of purpose. He had been prescribed strong medications that were offering only limited relief, and surgery was not an option he could pursue.
A friend suggested he consider chiropractic care. I still remember the look in his eyes. He was hopeful but unsure, simply wanting to feel like himself again.
During his initial exam, it appeared that his body was under significant stress and operating in a heightened fight or flight state. We discussed how chiropractic care is designed to support the nervous system and encourage better overall function. I also reminded him that progress can vary for every person and that patience would be important.
After his first adjustment, he stood up, took a deep breath, and became emotional. He shared that it was the most comfort he had felt in days. It was a meaningful moment for both of us.
Over the following visits, he began noticing changes in how he moved and how he felt day to day. Within a short time, he returned to work and shared that his mood and energy were improving. He continues with ongoing chiropractic visits because he feels they contribute positively to his well-being, and he has since encouraged his family to come in for their own assessments.
Experiences like his remind me how powerful it can be when someone feels supported, understood, and hopeful again.
